Do we know what we eat? The fact is that 90% of the population knows the name of the food but doesn't know what it's made of. This application describes in detail what the name of the substance added means, whether it is safe for human health, and to what extent.
The 'AVOID ADDITIVES' application helps you identify, recognize, and avoid additives that could potentially jeopardize your health. Considering that many additives, initially deemed safe, have been removed from use 10, 15, or even 20 years later due to proven genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, and similar adverse effects, this application provides insight into all additives permitted for human use that are suspected of being harmful.
For years, scientists have been publishing studies warning that many food additives (identified with E-numbers) cause hyperactivity syndrome, allergic reactions, headaches, or metabolic disorders in humans. Unfortunately, responsible institutions tend to respond to these findings too slowly because research indicating substance harm was conducted on animals, and the evidence is considered 'insufficiently reliable'.
An example is the genotoxic E171 additive, for which scientists warned of its adverse effects back in 2008 but unsuccessfully. It was only in 2022, after 14 years, that this additive was banned for human use.
The application is designed for people aware of this issue who do not want to introduce potentially harmful substances into their bodies or the bodies of their family members. The app lists all legally permitted additives with a brief description advocating for the safety or potential harm of the additive sorted by safety/harmfulness using red, orange, and green colors:
- RED: Potentially hazardous to health – AVOID
- ORANGE: Moderately hazardous to health – CONSUME OCCASIONALLY
- GREEN: Based on current knowledge, considered safe for health – DOESN’T JEOPARDIZE HEALTH
Important note: Some additives, even when marked with green, may cause adverse reactions in certain individuals. For example, E330 - citric acid is generally considered safe; however, there are documented cases where this additive triggers allergic reactions in some people.
All data within the application are derived from animal studies.
